Vetements Touches On Familiar And Makes It Unique For Spring 2018

June 24, 2017. Leave a Comment

Currently on hiatus from runway shows, Vetements revealed its spring 2018 men’s and women’s offerings through a lookbook shot in Zurich. Head creative Demna Gvasalia continues to play with the concept of true model diversity, using people of all ages, sizes, colors and backgrounds to model the line, an idea he first floated on the label’s fall 2017 runway.

As worn by awkwardly posed models against the most mundane of street backdrops (a commercial van, a bargain basement clothing store), one might be lulled into viewing the collection as mom/dadcore, but really the line is a balanced mix of the regular and edgy, a little something for everyone, whether their looking for either a low-key (a lime slicker) or in-your-face (all-over logo platform rocker boots) statement.

At the same time, the brand continues to show a collaborative spirit, mixing in brand shout outs to Reebok, Tommy Hilfiger, DHL and Umbro.

All told, between the styling and the actual silhouettes, it has the look of a thrift store raid, whose focus was ’90s-era widely popular silhouettes, all of which not only speaks to the label’s name (simply “clothes”) but is also fair play given the ongoing obsession among fashion’s edgiest with incorporating one-off vintage finds in their wardrobes.

As such, while the look of collection feels oddly familiar, the slight of hand is that within the high-end fashion world, Vetements stands alone in its approach.
