As part of Stockholm Fashion Week, creatives Virgil Abloh, Heron Preston and costume designer Selam Ghirmay Fessahaye took part in an hour-long discussion, moderated by Robert Zillén at SPACE by rmh, a platform for independent designers. The event took place in January 2017, but is just now being published on YouTube.
In the discussion, Abloh and Preston discuss the mashing up of creative fields, and also forward a “just do it” credo as it relates to taking the plunge when one is struck with an idea. Fessahaye pushed back on the point, arguing there is something to be said for working on one’s craft over a long period of time.
In an interesting aside, Preston spoke of his time working at Nike and spending $80,000 developing a campaign for the brand’s Riccardo Tisci collaboration, only to have it rejected it because higher ups wanted to stick with more traditional marketing efforts.
