Tyler the Creator‘s album Scum F*ck Flowerboy leaked on Sunday night (July 9, 2017) and social media is buzzing over lyrics some see as Tyler outing himself as gay. In the single “I Aint Got No Time” Tyler gets right to the point, revealing a preference for white men with the lines, “Next line will have ’em like ‘Whoa,’ I been kissing white boys since 2004,”
As well, on the single “Garden Shed” featuring Estelle, he raps about hiding in a “garden shed for the garçons” (French word for boys) in lyrics that include a shout out presumably to Frank Ocean, who came out as something other than straight in 2012.
Garden shed, garden shed, garden shed, garden shed
For the garden
That is where I was hidin’
That is what love I was I in
Ain’t no reason to pretend
Garden shed, garden shed, garden shed
Garden shed for the garçons
Them feelings I was guardin’
Heavy on my mind
All my friends lost
They couldn’t read the signs
I didn’t wanna talk and tell ’em my location
And they ain’t wanna walk
Truth is, since a youth kid, thought it was a phase
Thought it’d be like the Frank; poof, gone
But, it’s still goin’ on.
On Twitter, people have pointed to multiple statements Tyler has made over the years outing himself, including one in April 2015 which he plainly states, “I tried to come out the damn closet like four days ago and no one cared.”
There has been some push back on the theory simply because Tyler is an established troll and enjoys provoking people with controversial statements. Rapper Kamaiyah echoed the thoughts of many when she tweeted, “Tyler is such a f*ckin troll I don’t know if I should believe he’s gay or not…”
From our perspective, if Tyler is queer, more power to him. The great thing about young people today is that in general they just aren’t overly concerned with other people’s sexual orientations. At the same time, as big a figure as Tyler is, him coming out will definitely make life easier for those who live in communities where homosexuality is stilled viewed as a taboo.
Tyler’s album drops officially on July 21st and includes guest appearances by Frank Ocean, A$AP Rocky Kali Uchis, Estelle, Roy Ayers, Lil Wayne and Jaden Smith.
