Watch Frank Ocean Perform ‘Nike,’ ‘Chanel,’ ‘Biking’ And More At FYF Fest

July 23, 2017. Leave a Comment

After cancelling appearances at several festivals earlier this year, Frank Ocean came through last night (July 22, 2017) at the FYF Fest in Los Angeles.

The California-born and New Orleans-raised singer ran through some of his most popular songs including “Chanel,” “Biking,” “Thinking bout You,” “Pink + White,” among others. He also performed for the first time  a cover of Steve Monite’s “Only You.”

Ocean opened the show with “Solo” and went on to perform a total of 18 songs. He closed with “Nikes,” whose lyrics were shown on the stage screen to encourage the crowd (as if they needed any) to sing along.

Notably, when Ocean performed a cover of Stevie Wonder’s cover of The Carpenters’ song “Close to You,” the stage screen camera panned in on image of actor Brad Pitt, who was watching the performance from near the stage. Pitt credited Ocean for helping him recover from his break up with Angelina Jolie and praised his talents in a GQ magazine interview published in May 2017, for which he commented, “I find this young man so special. Talk about getting to the raw truth. He’s painfully honest. He’s very, very special. I can’t find a bad one.”

For some added intrigue, director Spike Jonze was spotted in the audience filming the performance.

Following the mention, at Ocean’s performance at the Parklife Festival in Manchester in May, he hollered back at Pitt when he wore a t-shirt wearing a screen photo image of the actor.

The GOAT Serena Williams says farewell to her care The GOAT Serena Williams says farewell to her career as a professional tennis player in the September issue of American Vogue.

In the cover story, which is a must read, Williams shares some thoughts on her evolution away from tennis and says,"Believe me, I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family. I don’t think it’s fair. If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of expanding our family. Maybe I’d be more of a Tom Brady if I had that opportunity. Don’t get me wrong: I love being a woman, and I loved every second of being pregnant with Olympia. I was one of those annoying women who adored being pregnant and was working until the day I had to report to the hospital—although things got super complicated on the other side. And I almost did do the impossible: A lot of people don’t realize that I was two months pregnant when I won the Australian Open in 2017."

The cover editorial was styled by Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, who in 2020 became the first black woman to style a U.S. Vogue cover.

This cover was also one of the last projects hairstylist #LatishaChong worked on before she sadly passed away in July this year.

Make-up by Raisa Flowers, nails by Dawn Sterling, and photography by Luis Alberto Rodriguez.
