Making her first high-profile appearance since stepping down from her role at J. Crew in April 2017, Jenna Lyons has reemerged as a guest stylist for Glamour magazine. The fashion featured in the editorial reflects Lyons unique talent for mashing up sport and runway-inspired looks, but also folds in some sage advice from Lyons on the importance of having a diverse group of friends. Walking the walk, Lyons tapped her friends (Sabina Karlsson, Cameron Russell, Tracy Morgan, Amy Sall, among others) for the article and also wrote a short note about each one.
“The women who appear in this portfolio are each here for a reason,” wrote Lyons in the article. “I chose them because I want to highlight how important it has been for me in my life to seek out people outside my comfort zone, people who are smarter than me, younger than me, older than me.
“The danger of media today is that you can self-select it to reinforce your interests. While that can help you find ‘your people,’ those whose version of America mirrors your own, what it does not do is help you find humans who are not like you. There is so much to be learned from perspectives and points of view that challenge you and open your world.
“The role I played as president and executive creative director of the J.Crew Group, where I worked for 26 years, afforded me the opportunity to be exposed to so many incredible characters. My advice is this: Try to do that for yourself. Make yourself uncomfortable.
