Paper magazine tapped into the glitz, glamour and awesome tawdriness of Las Vegas for its September issue with four covers featuring Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Backstreet Boys and Ricky Martin, all of whom share the commonality of Vegas residencies.
Given their notoriously frosty relationship, it’s somewhat amusing that Lopez and Cary are sharing the same issue, but at the same time it’s kind of neat that they’re together at last given that their feud seems to exist only in Carey’s head and is not based on much of anything.
The issue includes interviews with Paper editor Mickey Boardman with all the featured artists.
Lopez (shot by Ellen von Unwerth), was asked if does workouts on top of her two-hour, dance-filled show and amazingly enough, yes, she does. “No, I do. I work out in the morning,” said Lopez. “It just loosens up my body, gets me ready, keeps me strong. You know, injuries come when the muscles get weak or you over-work them. So you have to keep them strong, too.”
For the interview with Carey (shot by James White), she was asked about having diva moments and while she initially said she hasn’t ever had any (!) she then relented. “I have had diva moments, and then people can’t handle it,” said Carey. “I guess it’s a little intense, because I come from a true diva: My mother is an opera singer. And that’s a real diva, you know…Juilliard diva. And so other people that are like, ‘I’m a diva,’ it’s like, ‘Honey, you don’t know what a diva is, you didn’t grow up with my mom.”
