SZA Charms The Crowd At Afropunk’s Brooklyn Concert

August 28, 2017. Leave a Comment

Day one of Afropunk‘s Brooklyn event (August 26, 2017) was one that very much made a statement about putting female performers first with appearances by many of our faves, including Princess Nokia, Leikeli47, and Little Simz among others.

Singer/songwriter SZA was one of the final acts of the event, preceding Solange Knowles who closed out the show on the main stage.

While the singer expressed some trepidation about the event occurring early on in her “CTRL” tour with her and her band having just four prior shows under their belts, the performance went smoothly, highlighted by SZA’s distinct vocals, which receive (as they should) prominent placement in the mix.

It should be noted that SZA sings without aid of a backing track and her voice sounds as good if not better than her studio recordings.

Cutely, SZA shouted out her mother and aunt, who were in the front row, and apologized to her mom before singing the pussy-filled “Doves in the Wind.” And while the audience sang along to the bigger hits from CTRL, at one point SZA wondered out loud, “Did you guys know me before this album?”

SZA’s wardrobe choices are always noteworthy and for the event she was styled by New York-based stylist Ziggy Mack Johnson and wore pink Liv Streetwear tear-away track pants with a pink tube top and black Converse Chuck Taylor sneakers.

Check out some images and clips from the event below.

When we raised the idea of having a marching band, we wanted the energy, spirit, and sound.I really wanted to reach out and see if there was any possibility that we could make it happen. I am glad that we did.”
