There are a lot of ways in which Issa Rae has asserted the black female perspective in her hit HBO series “Insecure,” but one of the funnest has been character Issa’s t-shirts, which have included references to beloved musicians like Prince as well as major moments in black cultural and political history.
In fact, we’d go so far as to say in the history of TV series, there probably isn’t a female character whose graphic t-shirt has gone harder.
In episode 7, “Hella Disrespectful,” costume designer Ayanna James tapped two of our faves, Los Angeles-based women’s streetwear labels Dimepiece and Melody Ehsani.
During the scene in which she raps about her ex blocking her on Facebook, appropriately enough Issa wore Dimepiece’s “Real Men Wear Pink” Cam’ron long-sleeve t-shirt (sold out) and in the show’s “Wine Down” recap, Rae wore Ehsani and Reebok’s chambray jumpsuit ($99.95).
Check out both looks below. To keep an eye on James’ wardrobe choices for the show and Rae, follow her on Instagram.
