At VH1’s “Hip Hop Honors” show last night, two performance generated a lot of attention on social media. First up was Mariah Carey who sang her 1997 hit “Honey,” a performance that featured Jermaine Dupri, Da Brat, Mase and The Lox.
Carey brought her famed vocals, but barely moved other than to unzip her top before she began singing. During one part of the song, she sang while seated on a gold jet ski. When she did walk, she was accompanied by a dancer who held her arm. Physically, she was beyond low energy.
Not that it mattered to her loyal fan base, who praised her live singing skills, pointing out she is a legend and has never been one to mix singing and dancing.
Said one commentator on Twitter, “You’ve got to be insane to expect Mariah Carey, a singer who sold 215 million records by standing in one place on stage, to entertain/dance.” (Not only that, according to the RIAA, she is the third-best-selling female artist of all time in the United States.)
Meanwhile, Teyana Taylor who was the break out star of New York Fashion Week was widely praised for her energetic ’90s medly dance performance, viewed as all the more impressive because her foot was broken and she danced in a boot!! Though granted, Taylor was entirely focused on dancing and didn’t sing during her performance.
Check out both of their performances below.
