The 2018 Grammy Awards nominee list has arrived and it’s marked by the dominance of rap and r&b music, which goes hand in hand with a greater diversity of talent. The top seven most-nominated artists are all people of color and for the first time since 1999, there isn’t a white male nominated for the album of the year award.
In terms of trophy potential for the 60th Grammy Awards, one has to assume Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar are likely to bring home some hardware with both receiving eight nominations each. Bruno Mars follow with six nominations and artists with five nominations each include Childish Gambino, SZA, Khalid and No I.D.
Bronx rapper Cardi B sees her first appearance as a nominee with her No. 1 single “Bodak Yellow” garnering consideration for both best rap song and best rap performance. There was some confusion this morning about whether or not Cardi was involved in writing “Bodak Yellow” because her government name, Belcalis Almanzar, isn’t listed in the credits. Billboard reached out to a Grammy rep, who told the publication Cardi is credited as a songwriter under the name Washpoppin, which is also the name of a song from her 2016 mixtape “Gangsta Bitch Music Volume 1.”
The Grammy Awards recognize recordings released between October 1, 2016 and September 30, 2017. One of the big changes this year was the organization decision to allow online voting, a move made to encourage greater participation from the over 13,000 members 13,000 voting members of the Recording Academy, which consists of performers, songwriters, producers, engineers, managers, record executives and other industry personnel.
The Grammy Award show will broadcast live from Madison Square Garden in New York on Sunday, January 28, 2017 on CBS.
