Bronx rapper Remy Ma has dropped a video for “Wake Me Up,” a visual featuring fellow New York rapper Lil Kim on the hook. Remy hits on the theme of fake bitches, though she’s made it clear the lyrics are not directed at Nicki Minaj, noting that when she does target individuals she states their name.
In an interview with Beats 1 radio, Remy said the song’s main goal was honoring Lil Kim. “I wanted to pay homage to Kim. I feel like she is like the Madonna of the hip-hop world to me,” said Remy. “Her style is iconic, and I wanted to show homage and pay homage to that, so when I called her, I told her, I’m like, ‘Listen, I want you on this record, but I just want you to be Kim. I want you to be the girl that was squatting down in a leopard thong, be that Kim.'”
As part of the homage, the single includes a sample from Lil Kim’s 1996 “Queen Bitch” single.
Directed by Eif Rivera, the video features the two rappers shot against a Manhattan pier backdrop. Remy was styled by Jai Hudson and for her main look wore a custom Ronald Vanderkemp leopard jacket, a Victoria’s Secret bra, TopShop black latex pants and Tom Ford boots. Her second look, a black jumpsuit with white stripe detailing is by Vex Clothing.
Lil Kim was styled by Eric Archibald in a Limpasse black latex bodysuit, Adrienne Landeau fur and DSquared 2 boots.
Recently signed to Columbia Records, “Wake Me Up” is the first single from Remy’s upcoming upcoming solo album 7 Winters & 6 Summers, her first full-length project since her 2006 debut.
