Beyoncé with her daughter, Blue Ivy, and husband, Jay-Z, attended the second annual Wearable Art Gala in Los Angeles, where she was honored with a humanitarian award. The award was presented by her mother, Tina Knowles Lawson, who hosted the gala. Jay-Z’s mother, Gloria Carter, was also an honoree.
Introducing the award, Michelle Obama checked in via a remote camera and in a short speech praising Beyoncé’s humanitarian efforts stated, “I love you and I am inspired by you.”
Speaking at the podium, Beyoncé said, “I think the real reason I feel weird to receive this award from my mother is because I feel like I should be giving her an award tonight. There’s no one that I respect and admire more, and there’s no greater teacher.”
Beyoncé wore a see-through gold dress with a dramatic train designed by Indian husband and wife design team Falguni and Shane Peacock. After her arrival, she changed into an embroidered “Sphinx” abaya by Jean-Louis Sabaji. Knowles Lawson also wore a gown by Sabaji featuring gold silk feathers.
Blue Ivy wore a gold tinsel dress by Annakiki, a look she topped off with a metallic gold wig by Divamp Couture.
The gala raises money for WACO (Where Art Can Occur) Theater and this year had a costume theme titled “From WACO to Wakanda,” a nod to the popularity of the film Black Panther.
As part of fundraising efforts, the gala included an art auction, hosted by Star Jones. Sitting in between her parents, Blue Ivy used a paddle to bid on two paintings and was successful in placing a $10,000 bid for a mixed media work of art by Samuel Levi Jones. Beyoncé registered a winning bid of $17,000 for a pair of Lorraine Schwartz panther earrings she had previously worn on the red carpet.
