Atlanta-based Bali Baby has released a video for “Backseat,” a pop rock single. The video is colorful and fun, and yes, as the title implies, Bali is shot sitting in a backseat as she tools around New York. In between driving around, she rocks out on stage in a red and white vinyl outfit.
While Baby made her entry into music through an r&b and rap portal, she’s of a young generation of performers who as they’ve evolved have shed the burden of a single genre, instead taking inspiration from a variety of popular artists as interpreted through an irreverent and wavy 2018 lens.
Explaining her musical influences in an interview with XXL, Bali explained, “A lot of Lana Del Rey, Beyoncé and Jhené Aiko, I ain’t really listen to hip hop. I listened to radio music a lot when I was younger, and then I would listen to, literally, all Lana Del Rey, I would just blast her.
“I love rock-pop music. I listen to every song on Guitar Hero. As far as female rappers], Nicki Minaj, that’s it. I couldn’t listen to Lil Kim or Trina ’cause it was a whole lot of ‘I’ma suck this…’ That wasn’t me. Nicki Minaj has other stuff, she doesn’t just talk about that. So I rock with her.”
Prior to the single, the prolific performer dropped “Bali Blanco,” a five-song EP she released on March 30, 2018. Bali is in the midst of working on her debut album, Baylor Swift, set for a May 8th launch.
