The visual for XXXTentacion’s visual for “SAD!” was dropped today, a video directed by JMP and written by X aka Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy. In the video, X literally battles with himself, a conflict expressed in a funeral scene where two versions of X get into a fist fight.
While the visual may be viewed as an eerie foreshadowing of his death, the possibility of dying as a young man was a topic the 20-year-old X had addressed in his lyrics and interviews.
The video was filmed before he was shot and killed on June 18, 2018 in Deerfield Beach, Florida, shortly after he left a motorcycle dealership. Yesterday (June 27, 2018), his family held a memorial service, which included an open casket. The event was attended by thousands of his fans.
The Broward County Sheriff’s office has arrested Derrick Williams and charged him with first-degree murder. Robert Allen has also been named as a person of interest.
While XXXTencaion’s fan base is massive, mourners expressing sorrow over his passing received push back on social media from many who viewed his violent past as making him unworthy of memorializing. X was facing multiple legal charges at the time of his death, including aggravated battery of a pregnant woman and witness tampering.
The news of his death helped propel the single “SAD!” to a No. 1 position on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, jumping up from a spot at No. 52 last week. The single was included on his album ?, released on March 16th.
