Spanish label Loewe’s spring 2018 vibe was all about travel, experiences and discovery. Jonathan Anderson, the label’s menswear and footwear designer, took a cue from his favorite men’s slippers to create the Dinosaur sneaker, a suede shoe marked by a prominently upturned toe.
“They were based on a pair of Moroccan slippers I loved and had for ages, they’re like elf shoes! They were humorous. There’s no sense to them. But they make you laugh!” Anderson told Vogue.
Rooted in Punjabi and Mughal culture, Anderson’s slipper traditionally is referred to as a Khussa and the curved tip is called a nokh. In Morocco, the slipper is known as a Babouche.
While there is a fine line between inspiration and appropriation, the Loewe Dinosaur sneakers feels like a fun tribute with the added bonus of providing a new twist of the enduring lace-up sneaker silhouette.
Sized for men and women, Loewe’s Dinosaur sneaker is priced at $690 for the high version and $650 for the low version; they’re now available at matches.com and and loewe.com.
