Neelam Hakeem has dropped a video for “I’ll Be The King” a single that shines a light on the impact of patriarchal culture on women as viewed through the lens of a practicing Muslim woman.
In one scene, two groups of women, one dressed modestly and wearing hajibs and the other in skimpy club wear) in chains are led by a man, driving home the message that women’s struggles are universal.
The Marquis Henry-directed video also includes an Erykah Badu cameo and a shout out to Colin Kaepernick.
Neelam was also featured in a BET Hip Hop Awards Cypher that also included Bri Steves, Chika, Sharaya J and Erykah Badu.
