Untitled Art Fair  this year once again proved itself a must-visit for Art Basel Miami (December 6-9, 2018) art lovers.  Located on an Ocean Drive beachfront property, the fair takes a chic and modern approach to presenting art that elevates it above and beyond the typical white box  set ups of too many fairs.

Below, check out a selection of the 10 booths and artists at Untitled that made a big impression.

Known for large scale installations, Sadie Barnette presented as part of the New York-based Fort Gansevoort gallery.  Recreating a living room space, the installation featured her photography, an iridescent couch, a copper-flecked turntable and silver-coated speakers as well as empty silver and copper-colored beer cans strewn on the floor. The installation also included a jeweled-calculator wall-hanging that will soon be available for purchase.

Presenting with Albertz Benda gallery, Australian artist Kathryn Del Barton surrounded visitors with large-scale paintings of ethereal characters. “As you look into this booth, it looks back at you,” explained Barton in press about the Basel exhibit. “My intricately-painted pictorial narratives float on vortexes of eyes, along with a series of child-beast-portraits. The effect is that of a surrealist cubby house.”

Mariane Ibrahim gallery

Mariane Ibrahim gallery
Mariane Ibrahim gallery presented a striking collection of works by Clay Apenouvon, Lina Viktor, Zohra Opoku, Alexandra Kardashian and Sergio Lucena. With a booth placed at the entrance of the Untitled Fair, Ibrahim’s curation was beautiful, one that drew you in over and over again.

Summer Wheat

Summer Wheat
Summer Wheat’s bright and colorful work is eye-catching both for its scale and intricate technique, which involves embossing acrylic paint to create a texture similar to carpeting and embroidery.

Rirkrit Tiravanija

Rirkrit Tiravanija
Rirkrit Tiravanija and Tomas Vu’s “The Revolution Will Come in Every Direction” installation consisted of  a silkscreen t-shirt station that made use of a clay ink developed by Tiravanija’s studio. The clay was used for its connection to the land, but mostly as a statement on the temporary with the design only lasting for a few wears until the clay fades entirely.

Monica Bravo

Monica Bravo
Monica Bravo’s cool installation combined apparel, paintings and on-site birth chart by Bravo herself. She explained the concept in an interview with Art Newspaper, where she stated, “My astrology work and my art are intimately connected. The energies of our moment are powerful. We see them dissolving political and social structures all around us.”

Lucy Fradkin

Presenting with Steve Turner gallery, self-taught artist Lucy Fradkin showed an assortment of figurative paintings where the beauty of simplicity stood made a refreshing statement.

Brittney Leeanne Williams

The 2018 recipient of Joan Mitchell Foundation’s Painters and Sculptors grant, Chicago-native Brittney Leeanne Williams showed an arresting assortment of bold and curvy paintings with Zevita  Marcus gallery.

The Changing Room

Produced by Florida-based Girls’ Club collective, “The Changing Room” installation mimicked the look and feel of a changing room complete with racks of clothing, a commentary on a selfie-obsessed world, in which women live and die by their appearance. The space included a performance by dancer Jenny Larsson with art by visual artists Lucinda Linderman, Michelle Weinberg and Natalie Zlamalova.

Philly native Devan Shimoyama showed beautifully-textured, bright paintings where boyhood and African American masculinity intersect.
Artist Ekaterina Juskowski created a durational performance titled “Never Not Working,” highlighting women’s labor  contributions. Taking place over 50 hours, the concept of work was driven home through a display of red aprons.
