Bronx rapper Maliibu Miitch née Jennifer Jade Roberts celebrated the 20th anniversary of Foxy Brown‘s 1999 album Chyna Doll with a remake of the cover as well as a remix of the album’s iconic single, “Chyna White.” The album was released on January 26, 1999 and debuted at No. 1 on Billboard. At the time, it was only the second time (Lauryn Hill was first) in history an album by a female rapper landed the No. 1 spot.
On Instagram, Foxy née Inga DeCarlo Fung Marchand reflected on the album’s success, which was especially significant at the time because she did it independent of membership in a male crew. Foxy wrote, “That #1 CHYNA DOLL WINwas a WIN for every little black girl in the hood who dreams of this shit!!!! We set the BAR upper echelon every chick needed a DUDE to get em’ poppin’, I GOT THE GREATEST NIGGAZ POPPIN’!LIL’ FUCKING INGA MAKING MUSIC FUCKING HISTORY!!! WE MADE PRETTY DARKSKIN CHICKS FLYNAOMI & I, when the fly dudes used to shit on us, for the lightskinned chicks! I was raised by the 3 GREATEST, RUSSELL, HOV & NAS, so y’all know if I CO-SIGN sumpn’ it’s a WIN!”
