Multi-talented musician and flautist Shavone Charles, who’s the Head of Global Music and Youth Culture Communications at Instagram, has dropped a visual for “4C,” a title that references a black hair curl pattern.
Directed by Curtis Taylor Jr., the visually powerful video was shot on location at Susy Oludele’s Hair by Susy, a Brooklyn black hair salon whose prior clients have included Beyoncé, Solange and Zoë Kravitz.
Commenting on the video, Charles wrote on Instagram, “#4C is a melodic and lyrical ode to the beauty and pain of being a person of color and finding strength in our resilience. The song embodies the power self love, community, consciousness and black hair as a source of activism and core identity among women of color.”
An ode to the power and beauty of black women, the video includes appearances by mental health activist and Sad Girls Club founder Elyse Fox, makeup artist Raisa Flowers, Art Hoe Collective’s Gabrielle Richardson, Muslim activist and Equality For Her founder Blair Imani, singer/songwriter Alex Mali, Nigerian dancer Nestraya and Instagram beauty star Nnenna B.
