Childish Gambino‘s mysterious “Guava Island” music project finally has a launch date. Spotify has begun airing a 30-second “Guava Island” music spot titled “Guava Island” on which Gambino (real name Danny Glover) sings in a falsetto with the sound of crashing waves in the background. At the end of the spot, Gambino states, “See you at the show everyone.”
Along with the title, the single art reads “Saturday night, April 13,” the day after Gambino’s headlining Coachella performance. In addition to Spotify spots, billboards have also popped up in Los Angeles.
The project is especially intriguing because of videos and photographs that emerged in August 2018 showing Glover and Rihanna on location in Cuba, where they were photographed working on what was later identified as “Guava Island.” It’s not clear how much of the music project includes Rihanna, but she appears to have a starring role in the Hiro Murai-directed visual.
An official promo for “Guava Island” debuted in November 2018 on the final night of Glover’s three-night performance at PHAROS Festival in New Zealand.
