It took two years, but Detroit-born Lizzo (real name Melissa Viviane Jefferson) finally has landed her first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single with “Truth Hurts,” a song first released in September 2017. While not initially included on her April 2019 Cuz I Love You album, it was a part of the deluxe edition of the album dropped one month later.
On Instagram, an effusive Lizzo wrote, “WE’RE NUMBER 1. THIS IS A W FOR ALL OF US. ANYBODY WHO EVER FELT LIKE THEY VOICE WASN’T HEARD. ANYBODY WHO FELT LIKE THEY WEREN’T GOOD ENOUGH. YOU ARE. WE ARE. CHAMPIONS. I LOVE YALL 3 MUCH. LIZZBIANS UNITE 🌈☔️ SCROLL TO SEE MY ANNOYING ASS BLOOD SWEAT N TEARS ⛄️”
“Truth Hurts” started on its path to the Hot 100 chart when it was featured on the soundtrack for Netflix’s film Someone Great. It first charted on Billboard at spot No. 50 in May 2019.
In addition to supportive comments from her fans, Lizzo also received props from Cardi B and Lil Naz X, both of whom have also banked recent No. 1 Billboard hits.
