Cuban American singer Camila Cabello on Wednesday (December 18, 2019) apologized for a prior Tumblr account that was revealed on Twitter as filled with racist language and memes mocking black people, Asians, as well as musicians.

On social media Cabello wrote, “When I was younger, I used language that I’m deeply ashamed of and will regret forever. I was uneducated and ignorant and once I became aware of the history and the weight and the true meaning behind this horrible and hurtful language, I was deeply embarrassed i ever used it. I apologized then and I apologize again now.”
In a second paragraph, she added, “I’m 22 now, I’m an adult and I’ve grown and learned and am conscious and aware of the history and the pain it carries in a way I wasn’t before. These mistakes don’t represent the person I am or a person I’ve ever been.”
While Cabello didn’t mention the “vous-etess-belle” Tumblr account in her apology, the account was exposed on Twitter by a user who provided evidence it was once her account, including one post in which Cabello, who was around 16 at the time, posted an image of herself in response to a request by a follower. In a second Tumblr account called “our little secret” she also claimed as “vous-etess-belle” as an old account she was considering reclaiming.
In the midst of the Twitter exposé the “vous-etess-belle” account was deleted, however, the Twitter user had already captures screen images.
One meme reposted on the account mocked Rihanna‘s intelligence by referencing her assault by Chris Brown in 2009. Another questioned the intelligence of rappers with a meme illustrated with a Lil Wayne photograph. There were also reposts critical of Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and “all rappers.”
The reveal of the Tumblr account layers on top prior accusations she used the slur nigger to describe former Fifth Harmony members, including Normani, the only black member of the five woman group. The language was revealed after her phone was hacked and screen captures of her text exchanges were exposed on social media.
While Cabello never referenced the texts, she apologized in 2013 with a tweet that read, “i get how anyone that doesn’t know me would think those things about me, I was immature and young and joking(not an excuse) buti apologize.”
