French luxury label Balenciaga has turned some heads with a new slim sneaker silhouette called the Apex. Made in China and described as 100 percent “leather free,” the shoe features a quilted upper and elasticated rubber tongue and two lace openings. The label’s signature double-B logo is stamped in contrasting colors on the shoe’s tongue and heel tab.
The shoe is meaningful in part because it’s made by a label known for setting trends, but also because it’s an about face on the label’s Triple S sneaker, first launched in fall 2017 and widely viewed as the engine behind the over-sized, dad shoe trend.
On social media, Balenciaga’s Apex has been roundly mocked for its resemblance to Lonsdale’s Benn soccer sneaker, a shoe priced around $50.
Offered in either black or white, Balenciaga’s version of the shoe is $550 and is available in men’s and women’s sizing on balenciaga.com.
