Along with the release of the Birds of Prey sountrack on Friday (January 31, 2020), Bay-area rapper Saweetie dropped a visual for “Sway with Me” a single featuring GALXARA. Playing off of the DC Extended Universe film, both performers were dress in the hybrid glam punk style the lead character, Harley Quinn (played by Margot Robbie), is known for.
Fans were already irritated that Rico wasn’t invited to contribute to the soundtrack for a movie whose aesthetic screams her name, but insult was added to injury when the “Sway with Me” video dropped and Saweetie was styled in a Mohawk suspiciously similar to the ones Rico has been known to sport throughout her career. As fans put it, it appeared Saweetie was cosplaying Rico.
Never one to hold back, Rico told her fans to hold their fire. On Twitter, she explained, “I sat next to saweetie at the savage Fenty show . I don’t think she had anything do to with anything . I don’t think anything of anything iTs JUST a soundtrack . Thank you for fighting for me . I wasn’t the first black girl to wear spikes and thankfully I won’t be the last.”
