Brooklyn-based contemporary artist José Parlá celebrated his first solo museum exhibit at the Bronx Museum of The Arts on Wednesday evening (February 26, 2020) with a wide-ranging display of his work.
Titled “It’s Yours,” the show features large scale paintings, framed works on paper as well as memorabilia of Parlá’ s graffiti work under the moniker of Ease.
Parlá weighed in on the event on Instagram where he wrote, “Tonight is about everybody coming together. It’s Yours!! It’s Yours is the message I was inspired by in my youth by T La Rock’s song of the same name and I always believed it was an invitation to do your best and claim ownership in what you do.
“I’d like to dedicate the exhibition to Holly Block who with Manon Slome gave me this opportunity to show my work at the Bronx Museum. Also another special dedication to Kase 2 my mentor and all the writers and Hip Hop Heads who paved the way for the birth of so many beautiful cultural aesthetics in the visual arts, music, dance, style and innovation.”
The exhibition opened with musical performances by Yerba Buena and La Bruja, among others. Guests at the opening read like a New York OG hall of fame with attendees including DJs Clark Kent and Stretch Armstrong, sneaker aficionado Bobbito Garcia, photographers Johnathan Mannion, Austin Willis, Delphine Diallo and Renell Medrano, Alife designer Rob Cristofaro plus graffiti artists Stash, Kaws, Futura and Grave.
Jose Parla’s “It’s Yours” exhibit is on view at the Bronx Museum of the Arts through August 6, 2020.
