Artsy’s 2024 market recap spotlights Olaolu Slawn as the year’s breakout artist, reporting a staggering 1,082% surge in searches and inquiries—making him the most sought-after name in the commercial art world this year. The Nigerian-born, London-based creative and skateboarder achieved mainstream recognition with high-profile milestones, including his history-making design of the BRIT Award, a collaboration with Rolex on a limited-edition Datejust, and record-breaking attendance at his debut solo show at London’s Saatchi Yates gallery in September.
Artsy’s report attributes the surge to several factors, stating, “Artists experience surges in demand for several reasons. Their works might be featured in widely read publications or public events, or perhaps they have participated in a buzzy show or institutional exhibition that has made waves across the international art world.”
Slawn’s rise to prominence can also be linked to his authentic roots in streetwear and its associated subcultures, allowing him to bypass traditional pathways into mainstream success, a trajectory reminiscent of trailblazers like Virgil Abloh and Kaws. His connections to influential figures such as Street Souk founder Iretidayo Zaccheus, Corteiz founder Clint Ogbenna, and Ola of Vivendii have further anchored him within this dynamic creative network.
At just 15, Slawn was appointed creative director of Wafflesncream, Nigeria’s first concrete skatepark and skate brand, where his distinctive style began to take shape. Known for painted skate decks and customized Rimowa trunks, he describes his work as “simple, provocative, and probably annoying.”
In December 2024, Slawn’s second solo show at Saatchi Yates coincided with Art Basel Miami Beach, where his pieces were also featured at the Rubell Museum. Capping off a landmark year, GQ named him one of its 2024 “Men of the Year,” solidifying his position as a transformative force in the global art scene.
