Radio host Laura Stylez went head-to-head with Toronto-based, creative consultant Anna Bediones in Complex’s “Sneaker Battles,” a series hosted by Tony Mui. The first women to appear on the show, both were tasked with pulling their best silhouette for five different categories: animal print, date night shoe, woman designed, fanciest packaging and battler’s choice. After they pulled their choices, information was provided on the resale value of their respective shoes.
In the best women’s designer category, Stylez selected Nike‘s Vapormax designed by Cactus Plant Flea Market‘s Cynthia Lu while Bediones chose a Nike Air Max 1 Canada the 6 designed by Erin Cochrane. For honorable mention in the women’s category, Stylez pulled two different Air Jordan Retro 1 models, one designed by Melody Ehsani and the other Aleali May. Meanwhile, Lu flexed an Air Jordan Retro 4 pair designed by Olivia Kim exclusively for Nordstrom.
Responding to the pricing information on their choices, Stylez kept it real. “I don’t buy sneakers because of the value. I don’t care how much they cost. We buy them because we loves them,” she said and added, “I don’t think anybody should pay a thousand dollars for sneakers. If I don’t get them retail priced, I won’t buy them.”
Co-siging Stylez’s views on pricing, Bediones explained, “The way that I shop for sneakers is what I wear the most. And sometimes the things I wear the most are the most simplest sneakers. A lot of sneakers I’ve purchased in the past couple of years are sneakers I always wanted and couldn’t afford when I was younger.”
