New York City-based beauty supply store Ricky’s has announced it has closed its last location on 830 Broadway in Manhattan. In an Instagram post, the retailer stated, “To our Ricky’s friends and family here in NYC and around the world, It has been our honor to serve you in our stores over the years, and to spend the past month providing supplies during this time of need. As of today (April 8, 2020) we have permanently closed our last retail location at 830 Broadway.”
Established in 1989 by Ricky Kenig with a story in Greenwich Village, Ricky’s was a bold and flamboyant alternative beauty space where color and style ruled. The brand went on to expand with several locations, then declined significantly after a change in majority ownership in 2012.
In an interview with the NY Post last year, Kenig, who at the time held a five percent stake in the business, said, “We tried to stay ahead of the curve and offer things that no one else had when I was there, but the people who are in charge are not evolving the brand.”
