Los Angeles-based luxury retailer Maxfield has provided a summery editorial highlighting Dior‘s collaborative collection with Shawn Stussy. Tapping into Stussy’s roots as a California-born surfer, Maxfield highlighted pieces of the collection with a beach side editorial. As shot by Daniel Regan, looks included two sweaters, a woven top, t-shirt, bathrobe and cross-body bag, all of which are covered with Stussy’s rendition of the Dior logo.
First shown on Dior’s fall 2020 runway, the collection is meaningful because Stussy has largely kept the fashion world at arm’s length since he stepped away from the brand when he sold his remaining share of the company in 1996.
The Dior collection featuring Stussy’s designs was presented in advance of Art Basel in Miami on December 3, 3019. The presentation took place in a tent within the grounds of the new Rubell Museum, which opened to the public on December 4th.
“For me to work with someone like Shawn is a real honor,” Dior designer Kim Jones remarked at the time of the show. “He’s an artist, that’s the thing. If you can work that line like that, and it’s that memorable, it’s like an artist. That’s why I wanted to do it with him: he’s made an iconic image with his hand.”
As to what intrigued him about the project, Stussy explained, “I’ve said ‘no’ to a lot of things, and I was just waiting for the right one, and this just feels really good in that respect. I almost feel like I’m handing the wand off to the young crowd, Kim being the team captain, and he’s a lover of the game, he’s knowledgeable, he’s a student of our culture. I just really get the right feel.”
