SZA provided music lovers with a most excellent surprise last night with a midnight release of “Hit Different,” a sultry r&b jam featuring Ty Dolla $ign.
Writing about the drop on Instagram, SZA wrote, “Just wanted to share something ..🥺 thank you to every single person that brought my heart to life during Covid (sorry my hands are shaking ) 🌹 I love you all so dearly oki bye”
Produced by The Neptunes, the song’s lyrics express lingering, intense feeling for a beau who is somewhere between a lover and an ex, an ambiguous state of affairs that SZA has shown a talent for describing.
Shot in a car lot, the video was directed by SZA. Looking extremely fit, SZA is back by a crew of dancers dressed in the 29-year-old singer’s signature sexy/cozy look. Choreography was handled by Parris Goebel while SZA’s longtime stylist handled the looks.
In addition to the single and video, SZA also provided a preview of a second single, introduced in the outro for “Hit Different.”
In an interview with Zane Lowe this morning on Apple Music, SZA said to expect more music.”This is the beginning of me rolling out all my stuff…I can’t hold onto things,” she explained and added, “I have a sh*t ton of music. It all sounds so different, all the visuals are completely different.”
