Emerging rapper Charliee Cole provides some insight into her upbringing with a look around her Bronx neighborhood in a documentary style visual filmed by Hood Vlogs, a Los Angeles-based platform showcasing working class city life with all its triumphs and hardships.
In the episode, Charliee puts on her tour guide hat as she walks through her Highbridge neighborhood located in the west side of the borough and names Cardi B and A Boogie wit da Hoodie as individuals who grew up there. She also points out landmarks where films were shot including Made in Manhattan starring Bronx-born Jennifer Lopez.
As for the culinary arts, Charliee details her go-to restaurants and the significance of the City’s signature chopped cheese sandwich. In an emotional moment, she walks through the building where she was raised with six siblings in a three bedroom apartment and recalls finding her peace in a stairway where she would steal away by herself to write and think. While there, she recalled witnessing at age 10 a shoot out in her hallway, an event that led to her family relocating to NJ.
In speaking of her childhood Cole says, ” I feel like I have to save my family for some odd reason. I feel like if I don’t make it, we’re never going to make it. When you come from a place like this, it’s very hard to have a bigger vision. So, just out here grinding, linking, trying to do my thing, because I already know, I’m going to make it.”
Hood Vlogs was established in 2014 by Los Angeles-based and Russian-born film maker Ton, who thus far has primarily filmed in Los Angeles and other West Coast cities.
