In advance of Rihanna‘s Savage X Fenty fall 2020 presentation airing tonight on Amazon Prime, the CEO and music creative addressed the current plan for her eighth studio album, affectionately referred to as R8 by her fan base.
The topic of music is at the forefront not only because it’s been over four years since her last album, but also because there are rumors circulating she will perform a new single, allegedly titled “Real High” at tonight’s event.
Way back in spring 2019, Rihanna (real name Robyn Rihanna Fenty) affirmed rumors R8 album would be reggae themed. However, based on her interview with the Associated Press, it sounds like those plans have been shuttled in favor of a project that brings her joy.
“We started with tons of writing camps and now it’s more, what do I feel personally? What do I want to put out? And as an artist, how do I want do I want to play with my art? How do I want to interpret that? How do I want to reimagine it?” she explained.
Reflecting a decision to break with her past, she noted, “Because it’s been so structured before. You do pop, you do this genre, you do that, you do radio, you do who’s following you and your fans.
“Now it’s just like, ‘What makes me happy?’ I just want to have fun with music. Everything is so heavy. The world that we live in is a lot. It’s overwhelming every single day. And music, I’m using that as my outlet, and I just want to have fun with that.”
