Saweetie and Doja Cat celebrate the joy of female friendship in “Best Friend,” a new song accompanied by a Dave Meyers-directed visual. Released on Friday (January 8, 2021), the video spent the day trending at the No. 1 spot on YouTube.
“Best Friends” arrives in advance of Saweetie’s Pretty Bitch Music, an album slated for a spring 2021 launch.
The eye-popping visual opens with the bikini-clad duo relaxing on lounge chairs, enjoying a poolside hang when they’re approached by a male named Jamal who pretends to be offended by men who are staring at their bodies and as he claims, objectifying them.
Communicating telepathically, Saweetie and Doja banter back and forth about Jamal’s true intentions: “Another fake woke misogynist.” “Does he really think he’s an ally to the feminist cause?” “Please! That kind of crass virtue signaling is nothing more than but a less overtly nefarious form of toxic masculinity.”
With Jamal dismissed, the video segues into an bouncy ode to women enjoying each other’s company as they shop, drive a crystal-covered car around the city, commit crimes and encourage each other to take big leaps.
As styled by Bryon Javar and Brett Alan Nelson, fashion plays a starring role in the video with Saweetie and Doja sporting looks ranging from Clueless-inspired matching tweed suits by L.O.C.A. to custom Gucci by Dapper Dan looks.
