Tennis player Naomi Osaka, who is currently ranked No. 2 by the Women’s Tennis Association, took to Instagram today (April 27, 2021) where she announced plans to launch new skincare brand Kinlò, formulated to “protect and rejuvenate melanated skin tones.” Reflecting Osaka’s dual heritage, The “kin” in Kinló means gold in Japanese while lò translates to the same word in Hatian.
Kinló’s first range of products includes an SPF 40 tinted face lotion which additionally provides protection against blue light, an SPF 50 tinted face lotion formulated for activity, body spray, lip balm, and eye cream. Formulated to address brown-hued skin, the tinted formulas to blend without white residue.
Commenting on her recent embrace of sunscreen, she wrote, “For me, this project is something that requires more than just being a spokesperson. This is a public health need. I used to tell people that I didn’t need to wear sunscreen, but even if you have melanin, you need to take care of your skin, and I am passionate about that.”
Responding to questions on Instagram about whether there are items that treat eczema, Osaka provided additional background on Kinló ingredients. She wrote, “We were intentional on selecting more plant-based ingredients for each product in the line. Even though it doesn’t specifically treat eczema, you may find some of the products helpful in barrier repair, such as our lip balm.”
All Kinlò products are priced under $20 and will launch in fall 2021 on kinlo.com as well as a soon-to-be announced retailer.
