Nike Debuts Official WNBA Uniforms And Lifestyle Collection

Nike has debuted a new set of WNBA official uniforms alongside a lifestyle collection, both of which celebrate the league’s 25th season. The brand describes offerings as “the most comprehensive player, team and fan apparel collection in the league’s history.”

The collection features three game uniform for each of the 12 teams: Nike Heroine, Nike Explorer and Nike Rebel. Nike has also created a lifestyle collection for off-court activity called Game Theater as well as a capsule of fan gear featuring the league logo called WNBA Team 13.

Each design tells a story reflecting team’s name and location. For example, in the case of the Dallas Wings Rebel edition, the jersey is described as “Inspired by the stealth and ferocity of the World War II P-40 Warhawk, a plane manufactured in Texas and test-flown by Women Airforce Service Pilots (W.A.S.P.), the uniform is set over a military-grade green field.

Reflecting the importance of fit, the new WNBA Nike uniforms have been re-engineered based on player feedback. The collection also features the debut of Nike DRI-FIT ADV technology, a knit material providing more freedom of movement and comfort.

Accommodating the shapes of women’s bodies, the game shorts have more room in the thighs and the glutes, and the game jerseys add more room across the chest plus overall proportion adjustments. The game jerseys also feature an assortment of three necklines: a round-neck, a v-neck and the new Victory neckline exclusive to the WNBA.

Commenting one the effort, Nike vice president of women’s apparel design Tania Flynn explained, “When our team met with our athletes, their feedback was very clear. They wanted a uniform that fits them, not one they have to fit into. They wanted a connection to their team and fans, but also wanted to express their personal style. And they wanted us to tell their story. The new uniforms obsess all of those details for the world’s best players, technically and creatively.”

Nike’s WNBA Rebel edition uniforms will launch for Nike members on nike.com and the Nike app on April 8, 2021. The WNBA Explorer edition and the WNBA Team 13 collection will be available beginning April 14th.

Taking inspiration from a feminine Y2K aesthetic, the collection embodies designers Charlotte Knowles and Alexandre Arsenault’s ability to balance sexy and cool. 

In an interview with Vogue, the pair shared that they are currently working on a new design director role in Europe and have several other projects in the pipeline, including another denim project, a collaboration with a jewelry brand, and a menswear capsule for an e-commerce site.

Commenting on the lookbook styling, they shared, "Obviously in the lookbooks it's styled in a quite extreme way, but if you break it down into individual pieces, we've been thinking about merchandising and the customer more than ever before," said Arsenault. "We've seen the team in the studio wearing the pieces differently too, and we've taken that into account. It's a nice challenge to say: 'Okay, we want to make a sweatshirt, but it still has this silhouette or wash or rib detail that makes it feel really Knwls."
