Denim Designer Morgan Lewis Reveals The Must-Have Denim Silhouettes And Washes For 2022

April 25, 2022. 1 Comment

Take a look at the spring 2022 runways and the presence of denim cannot be ignored. The difference this year is the explosion of not just washes and treatments but also an array of silhouettes.

With spring in full swing and summer just around the corner, we checked in with designer Morgan Lewis about her passion for denim, the brands she views as leading and this year’s 10 hottest trends denim trends.

Snobette: What attracted you to denim?
Morgan Lewis: “I was searching for a job five years ago and was contacted by a nice recruiter on LinkedIn who insisted I apply to an open denim position she had. Until then, I had only designed a denim jegging with a minimal dry process. Denim was not my expertise. Now, I no longer have an interest in designing anything besides denim. I like to describe learning about denim as peeling back layers of an onion. People have no clue how much goes into making denim despite how ubiquitous it is. It’s quite fascinating.”

Snobette: Looking at the trends you selected, do you have a personal favorite?
Morgan Lewis: “It’s a tie between low rise and boot cut, reminds me of my youth.”

Snobette: Can you share with us your three favorite women-owned denim brands?
Morgan Lewis : “Oak and Acorn by Miko Underwood, Mother Denim co-owned by Lela Becker and Pistola by Grace Na.”

Below, check out Morgan’s takes on the 10 hottest denim trends for summer 2022 and beyond.

Denim bras and corsets: “Nothing says warm weather like a cute bra top or corset. Make it denim and you now have a great top to complete your Canadian tuxedo.:
Contoured cuts: “The contoured jean provides gorgeous style lines and can aid in the illusion of a more shapely figure. Let’s face it, not all the gworls want to go to Dr. Miami.”
Y2-K prints: “Break out your Lisa Frank!! This trend is giving me so much life. It’s full of expressive energy but not for the faint of heart. It also represents optimism post lockdown.”

Ombre/Gradients: “If you think Y2K prints are a bit mcuh, can I interest you in this? Also fun and full of energy but minus the craziness. I’d also like to officially stick a pin in this trend because it will show up in fall denim under another name, so stick around.”
Workwear/ Utility: “I’d like to think this trend is two-fold: The celebration of us going back to work and a nod to the tons of DYI projects we took up during COVID lockdowns. Remember when The Home Depot parking lot was packed at 2 PM despite commercial construction being non-existent? Wild times….
Low Rise: “Someone call Mariah Carey and tell her to bring the scissors!!!!!!! My favorite of all the ’90s trends. If this isn’t low enough for you there is an ultra-low rise fit in stores too!”
Boot Cut: Another nostalgia-driven trend. I’m surprised this trend took so long to come back on account of how chunky sneakers have become.”
Relaxed fit shorts: “For those who don’t usually like denim shorts, these may pique their interest. As shown above, the relaxed cut can be found in lightweight chambray fabrics or more traditional weight denim.”
Wide Leg: “The cut of the skater boy has returned. Wide legs are very forgiving and an easy way to get back into jeans for anyone reluctant to give up their COVID sweat pants.”
Two-Tone: “J’Adore this trend. It’s all over the market from mall stores to mid-tier and high-end denim. You can find it in varying levels of contrast. Some even feature a white panel contrasted by a non-indigo color on the other side.

In sad news, Kering hasn't realized its mistake an In sad news, Kering hasn't realized its mistake and brought back Alessandro Michele (kidding but not really). Instead it's announced the appointment of Sabato De Sarno as Gucci creative director. De Sarno will present his debut runway collection at Milan Women’s Fashion Week in September 2023.

The 39-year-old Sabato De Sarno was raised in Naples, Italy. He began his career at Prada in 2005, moving to Dolce & Gabbana, before joining Valentino in 2009, where he eventually was appointed fashion director of men’s and women’s collections.

De Sarno's resume is no joke, so we look forward to seeing what he brings to the table and will do our best to not hold it against him that he replaced Michele. That's on Kering.
French luxury conglomerate LVMH announced earnings French luxury conglomerate LVMH announced earnings yesterday and noted that Fenty Beauty doubled its revenue in 2022 versus the prior year. In an earnings release the company attribued the growth to "expansion of its distribution network and the success of its launches."

First launched with LVMH's beauty brand incubator Kendo in 2017, Fenty's growth over the past several years has largely been fueled by global expansion.

Comnenting on Fenty Beauty's first forray into Asia, CEO Rihanna in 2019 stated on social media, "When I launched @fentybeauty in 2017, it was important to me to make sure it was available globally so everyone had access to it. We are continuing to expand our Fenty Beauty family to Hong Kong, Macau, Seoul and Jeju in September!”

While LVMH didn't provide 2022 Fenty Beauty revenue figures, it announced the beauty brand brought in $573M in revenue in 2018. Forbes in 2021 valued the entire operation as worth $2.8 billion, of which 50% belongs to Rihanna.

Tiktok sensation Terri Joe has landed a feature wi Tiktok sensation Terri Joe has landed a feature with Paper magazine with an editorial shot by Oscar Ouk.

Assuming the character of a conservative Christian southern belle, Terri Joe's live exchanges attract thousands of viewers and have lead to exchanges with Doja Cat, Madonna and Hunter Schafer.

In real life, Terri Joe is Kelon, a 27-year-old based in Houston (who is okay with any pronoun). According to Paper, Kelon worked in tech before becoming a fulltime content creator with more than a million followers on his main account @_psyiconic.

When asked about the origins of Terri Joe (who is white), Kelon explained, "It actually didn’t start off with Terri, but with Jeorgia Peach. It started with that background and with me talking to random people and saying the most random things. And then one day I decided it would be funny to just throw on a grandma costume that I had and a raggedy wig and just go on Live. I think I was loosely basing it off of a character from my favorite TV show True Blood."
