While in New York last week for the Met Gala where she also performed, music creative SZA had a revealing exchange with fans that began as a discussion about her upcoming album and ended with a conversation about her dating history with Capricorns. Returning to Manhattan’s The Mark Hotel following the event, SZA (real name Solána Rowe), who was still wearing a boot from breaking her ankle after falling out of bed, took selfies and chatted with fans while clad in a white and blue varsity jacket paired with Adidas Superstar sneakers.
Fueled by SZA’s Meta Gala red carpet interview earlier in the evening where she revealed she planned to release an album during summer 2022, a fan shouted, “SZA, SZA, we’re waiting on it, we’re waiting on the 15 tracks!” to which SZA responded, “I’m trying to say, how many do you think is too many?” In response to a second fan asking about a deluxe version, SZA noted, “This time the deluxe is going to be done before anything else. first.”
SZA Claims 11 Year Engagement
The fan who queried about the 15 tracks then added, “Capricorn supremacy, right?” to which SZA enthusiastically responded, “I love Capricorns. I dated a Capricorn for 11 years. I was engaged to a Capricorn.”
The statement received immediate push back on Twitter where some questioned the veracity of her Capricorn claim. While a seemingly innocent statement, over the years SZA has built up a reputation among a small segment of social media users who view her as having a propensity for telling inconsistent stories about her diet and beauty history as well as her upbringing.
Clearly irritated by the chatter, SZA in a since deleted tweet responded under the video showing the exchange, where she wrote, “Now niggas wanna pretend nobody used to ask ‘is SZA is engaged?’ Cause I wore a ring. Pre ctrl. Why would I lie about being w anyone for 11 years. not a joke. the shit ruined my life and I worked hard to rebuild it. F*ck y’all. On everything. Believe what you want.”
Jumping into the fray, Top Dawg Entertainment president Terrance “Punch” Henderson backed up SZA’s version of events on Twitter where he wrote, “Wait… that’s not true??? She came to the studio the night she got engaged lol.”
Still fuming from response to the innocent change, SZA added added a trio of tweets that read, “I swear to God if I didn’t accidentally fall in love w music .. I would NEVER EVER COME OUTSIDE . Y’all suck the joy and life out of EVERYTHING. Thank God for purpose cause Outside of art it’s fuck y’all . Now run w that. When I said I BE SO SICK OF U NIGGAS YALL CONTRADICTING . I was talking to everyone. Not men . For the record . I hate u was a universal emotion. Take care .And please know when I drop anything it’s not for y’all . It’s to free my motherfucking self .”
SZA’s Rumored Relationship History
While navigating relationships are a common theme in her lyrics, SZA has stayed very quiet about who she’s dated. When Drake stated in his 2020 single “Mr. Right Now” that they dated in 2008, SZA went on to confirm the news, noting they actual got together in 2009, but otherwise she hasn’t mentioned anyone by name.
In a 2014 exchange with Clash Music, SZA said she met Terrence “Punch” Henderson in 2011 through her job at 10 Deep where she said she was dating the creative director. There’s chatter the boyfriend in question is 10.Deep founder Scott Sasso, who was also the brand’s creative director, however, he got married in 2010 and according to his Instagram account he was born in May, so even leaving aside his marriage, he can’t be the Capricorn she claims she dated for 11 years.
