New York-based rapper Maiya The Don dropped “Telfy” today (October 7, 2022), a hard-hitting single whose title and chorus pays tribute to Telfar‘s famed Shopping Bag tote. Produced by Shaan Mehta, the song is having a bit of a moment on TikTok where it’s received two-million views.
Introduced by Telfar eight years ago, the Shopping Bag over the past few years has become a mainstay of Black American style. Recently, the brand was mentioned by Beyoncé in “Summer Renaissance,” a momentous shout out that help boost demand for the Brooklyn-based brand.
Rappers and r&b singers have long boasted about the luxury labels they wear, so much so their lyrics act as a form of spoken word documentation on the popularity of various items of clothing and accessories through the decades. Typically, the shout outs are for items made by white-owned luxury labels, so it’s heartening to to see the Black-led Telfar receiving some well-deserved tribute.
