London-based writer and consultant Nav Gill is fresh off of publishing She Kicks (available to order here), a beautifully curated book four years in the making telling the stories of the women who have shaped sneaker culture. As it happens, we first crossed paths with Gill at Sole DXB‘s annual fashion and streetwear festival in Dubai where was tapped to host a She Kicks book signing event at a Virgin Megastore.
A heavy hitter in the culture whose known for using her platform to advocate for women, Gill was an editor for Hypebae and has written for platforms including Nylon, Hypebeast, and Mr. Porter, among others. She’s also participated in panel discussions on women in streetwear and was named one of the “18 Most Outstanding Women in the Sneaker Industry” by Business Insider.
Weighing in on her choice of Nike and Stüssy‘s Air Max 2013 (especially the fossil colorway) as her No. 1 shoe, Gill explained, “I love that Stüssy chose to revive a pretty under-the-radar Air Max iteration, the 2013, for this collab, rather than opting for something that has more widespread hype appeal.
“Another thing I think made this release so great was how the three versions all had their own distinct design identities, but still looked cohesive as one singular release—for example, the colorful ombré underlay on the black pair that adds some depth to the upper, and the fact that the fossil pair features a concealed air unit for a more streamlined tonal finish.”
