Complex has debuted a new series titled “Please Explain,” hosted by Aria Hughes, the platform’s editor in chief. Described as “a new explainer show that adds context, not confusion, to the internet,” “Please Explain” aims to provide deeper insights on cultural topics. Throughout the interview, Hughes would pause the exchange to cut to explainer charts to define terms used in their conversation.
The series made a big splash with its first guest, James Whitner, the founder of the The Whitaker Group, an umbrella company whose entities include 20 sneaker boutiques including A Ma Maniére and Social Status, as well as vacation properties and a skateboard park, among other businesses
The interview was meaningful because it marked the first time Whitner has spoken to the press following the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s recent decision to end pursuit of money laundering charges against him. Charges were dropped shortly after Whitner’s gave up a claim to $1.2 million that had been seized from one of his business associates when he was arrested in 2023 for money laundering.
During the exchange Hughes queried Whitner on an array of topics, such as why there are so few Black sneaker boutique owners, current trends in the industry and his approach to designing collaborative product. He also shared his future plans, including opening a new A Ma Maniére store in Harlem. Whitner also touched on his ongoing relationship with Nike and reflected on the recent resolution of federal allegations. Hughes also pressed Whitner on accusations that he’s backdoored product.
