Kalena Kai Swimwear, founded by Tanya Kalena De Costa, debuts its first collection, offering three distinct styles designed to evoke the beauty and essence of Hawaii. De Costa, born and raised in Wahiawa, Oahu, has crafted pieces that reflect her island roots and affinity for swimwear. The debut Kalena Kai collection includes the Kalena Kai One to Two Piece, a versatile design that can be transformed into multiple looks. The Kolohe Kini is a two-piece featuring a side strap and a center crisscross bikini top, while the Puamahina Kini stands out with a unique collar detail that adds an edge to the classic bikini silhouette.
Drawing inspiration from Hawaii’s breathtaking landscapes, De Costa aimed to infuse her designs with the spirit of the islands. The name Kalena Kai, meaning “pure ocean” in Hawaiian, combines her name with her brother’s, symbolizing the close connection between land and sea. In a press release De Costa explains her vision and says, “My intention was to create a swimwear brand that embodies the spirit of my homeland, The North Shore, Wahiawa Oahu, and The Big Island, with a minimal footprint. Crafting our debut collection with a focus on minimal environmental impact and maximum resonance was paramount. I’m passionate about celebrating the female form and finding our mirror in the soft curves of mother nature.”
Kalena Kai Swimwear aims to center sustainability hence, each piece is made from Amni Soul Eco fabric, a biodegradable polyamide that features chlorine-resistant elastane yarn and offers UV protection. Production is handled by Atelier Amelia, a CFDA-recognized swimwear manufacturer in New York, led by Zhu Ru Chen, who, like De Costa, hails from Hawaii.
