South Carolina-based artist Jordan Mack, also known as 13 Stitches styled as @Xiiist on Instagram, has captured the hearts of style and music enthusiasts with her handmade crochet beanies. Inspired by her favorite albums, ranging from SZA’s SOS to Frank Ocean’s Blond, Mack is forging a unique path blending collectible art with fashion. Making use of crochet, each creation is adorned with intricate handmade beading that are equal parts an artisitic statement and functional piece of clothing.
In an email exchange, Mack shared her inspirations, creative process, and the ambitions driving her.
Snobette: Where do you call home?
Jordan Mack: “I’m based in Orangeburg, South Carolina.”
Snobette: What is your first connection with art and fashion? Was it always a passion?
Jordan Mack: “I used to sketch clothing and accessories randomly in my free time, but I never really pursued it seriously until I learned how to crochet.”
Snobette: How did you get into crochet?
Jordan Mack:“I taught myself how to crochet for my college finale a few years ago, and it just stuck! I started in 2022, so it’s been about three years now. Wow, I hadn’t realized it’s been that long!”
Snobette: The music-themed hats are stunning! How did the idea for this unique concept come about?
Jordan Mack: “Thank you! Honestly, it happened accidentally. I’ve always loved music, but I also have a deep appreciation for album cover art since I used to draw and paint. I had Flower Boy on repeat and thought, ‘Why not?’ I started experimenting, and that became my first hat. Then I thought, ‘Okay, heck yeah, let’s make another one,’ and it just kept going from there!
Snobette: How long does it typically take to craft one of the beanies?
Jordan Mack:”It really depends on the design, but each piece so far has taken 50-plus hours of sitting time. That includes making the base, crocheting the imagery, adding details, beading, and more. I space that time out across multiple projects to avoid injuring my hands because I want to do this for a long time.
Snobette: Are they designed to be worn, or are they intended more as collectible art pieces?
Jordan Mack: “They’re definitely designed to be worn! I hope people are wearing them, but the idea of them being collected as art pieces is a nice thought too.”
Snobette: Lastly, are your designs available for purchase?
Jordan Mack: “Yes, my designs are available for purchase, and I plan to update my shop soon. While I do take commissions, I still see my work as an artistic project. I have so many pieces and ideas I haven’t shared yet, and I can’t wait for everyone to see what’s next!”
