Singer and actress Halle Bailey today (July 3, 2019) was announced as landing the role of Ariel, the lead character in Disney’s live action remake of Little Mermaid, a musical first released in 1989. In the film, Ariel is the daughter of King Triton and longs to leave the sea and live life on dry land.
Commenting on the news, the film’s director Rob Marshall stated, “After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence and substance, plus a glorious singing voice, all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” said Marshall in a statement.”
The 19-year-old Bailey is best known as part of Chloe x Halle, a sister duo signed to Beyoncé‘s Parkwood Entertainment label. Additionally, Bailey has played a supporting role on TV series “Grownish.”
