The rumors have been swirling for most of the year and today Solange confirmed they are true. In a lengthy Instagram post, the Houston-born creative stated she has separated from Alan Ferguson, her husband of five years.
In the post, she alluded to a shift in her perspective on the relationship that began two years ago. The 33-year-old wrote, “the past 2 years have brought me more physical and spiritual transition and evolution than ever before my body left me with no choice but to listen and be still within that stillness i begin my journey in confronting my worst enemy, fear. ive lived my best and worst moments in front of the lens and gaze of the world since i was a teenager. ive always tried to live in my truth no matter how ugly or full of love it is. ive also tried to carve out the space to protect my heart, and my life as it unfolds, evolves, and changes.”
Confirming the end of their relationship, Solange added, “11 years ago i met a phenomenal man who changed every existence of my life. early this year we separated and parted ways, (and tho it ain’t nan no body business 😭) i find it necessary to protect the sacredness of my personal truth and to live in it fully just as I have before and will continue to do. it is unfair to not have power of your own story as you shape and mold and rewrite it yourself. a nigga ain’t perfect, but im leaning into the fear of the unknown and all the glory and power i know exist within god and the universes grace. may all of your transitions no matter how big or small, be kind to you and filled with incredible love and light!”
Once frequently spotted in each other’s orbits, the couple hadn’t been seen in public since March 2019 when they were shot by paparazzi while having lunch in Los Angeles. Not long after, the Solange and Fergusen rumor mill went into overdrive when Solange was spotted at a Met Gala after party dancing body to body with a man who wasn’t her husband.
Solange and Fergusen wed in November 2014 with a photogenic ceremony in New Orleans attended by 200 guests including Beyoncé, Jay-Z and their daughter Blue Ivy.
The couple were frequent collaborators with Fergusen having directed the music videos for “Don’t Touch My Hair” and “Cranes in the Sky” from the Solange’s third studio album, A Seat At The Table.
In an April 2018 Instagram post, Solange revealed she was introduced to Fergusen ten years prior by Pete Wentz and Janelle Monáe. Prior to Ferguson, Solange was married to Daniel Smith with whom she has a son, Daniel Julez J. Smith Jr.
