Los Angeles-based designer Melody Ehsani today revealed her sophomore collaborative design effort with brand Jordan, a cherry kissed basketball shoe simply called Air Jordan Women’s.
Appropriately enough, Ehsani as a youth played basketball and at age 11 was passionate enough about the game that she wrote a letter at age 11 to Magic Johnson protesting that his Los Angeles-based summer basketball camp was open to boys only.
The shoe Ehsani is working off of made its debut in 1998 and was the first performance basketball shoe created for women. While made for and worn by female players, the shoe was considered dope enough that NBA players also wore it.
Jordan relaunched the shoe last month in the original white colorway, which Ehsani swapped out for black with red hits on the outsole tongue and heel. Additionally, her shoe is detailed with reflective piping on the upper and, ever mindful of the details, the shoe also includes a double cherry lace lock.
In the Instagram post announcing the shoe, the caption read, “Melody is bringing back the women’s Jordan basketball shoe in honor of women’s history month, the ladies of the WNBA and the anniversary of Love & Basketball. This commemoration of the shoe comes with the emblem of a cherry, which throughout time has been associated with symbols of abundance, fertility & protection. I pass these on to you.”
Ehsani wears the shoe with a coordinated ME sweatshirt and sweatpants and while she hasn’t announced it officially, it’s a good bet she will carry some cherry-themed clothing items in her store around the time of the sneaker launch.
As of now, there’s no pricing, but Ehsani has said to expect a launch in March 2020, reflecting Women’s History Month.
