The biggest night in fashion will not take place on May 4, 2020 as planned. In an effort to reduce the spread of coronavirus, The Met Gala has been postponed indefinitely. The much-celebrated annual event affectionately referred to as the Olympics of fashion takes place each year at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art on the first Monday in May and is directed by Vogue‘s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.
The decision was spurred by a memo sent to museum staff on Monday (March 16, 2020) announcing the museum would remain closed through April 4th. At the same time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advised over the weekend that there should not be any gatherings of 50 people or more for the next eight weeks. In a written statement, a Metropolitan Museum spokesperson announced, “In deference to [the CDC’s] guidance, all programs and events through May 15th will be canceled or postponed.”
Each year, the event is underpinned by a specific point of inspiration guiding both attendee outfits and the exhibit. For 2020, the exhibit is titled “About Time: Fashion and Duration,” a concept paying homage to the works of author Virginia Woolf and the theories of the French philosopher Henri Bergson.
Each year, there are a committee of co-chair co-chairs and this year, committee members include Meryl Streep, Emma Stone, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Nicolas Ghesquière, the women’s designer for Louis Vuitton, which is sponsoring the event.
