Nike celebrated Earth Day on April 22nd with the debut of a new series called “Talking Trash,” which features conversations between young leaders and the world’s leading climate experts.
The debut effort features singer/songwriter Billie Eilish who chats with marine biologist Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson about practical ways everyone can contribute to helping maintain the health of the planet.
The choice of Eilish to kick off the series is intriguing mainly because there were rumors of her collaborating with Jordan on a sneaker back in 2019 that never materialized. As such, we can’t help but wonder whether this is a signal that some sort of product partnership (perhaps sustainability related?) is back on track.
While no mention was made of a collab in the exchange, the conversation was a productive one. Commenting on the chat, Johnson said, “When I sat down with Billie Eilish, we discussed our shared commitment to being part of climate solutions. From renewable energy to electrifying transportation, to regenerative agriculture and restoring ecosystems, there are so many solutions we have at our fingertips.”
Responding to the often asked question what people can do first, Johnson suggesting creating a Venn diagram examining three areas: the individual’s skill set, what needs to be accomplished and what brings the person joy.
Johnson concludes, “Find the epicentre of your Venn diagram and spend as many minutes there as possible. While this is the work of our lifetimes, there is really no reason it needs to be miserable, don’t leave out joy!”
