Today Adidas announced news of a partnership with Yuga Labs-owned Bored Ape Yacht Club, one of the most prominent collections in the nonfungible token space (NFT) and Punks Comic, an NFT comic series drawn by Marvel and DC Comics artist Chris Wahl.
The announcement also stated the athletic brand is working with the pseudonymous GMoney, who is a top NFT collector viewed as a thought leader in the space. GMoney is also a general partner of Delphi INFINFT, a fund built with crypto research and investment firm Delphi Digital, which invests in NFT projects.
The effort was announced on Instagram with the reveal of a Bored Ape NFT dubbed Indigo Herz, drawn wearing an Adidas tracksuit bearing Bored Ape Yacht Club, Punks Comic and GMoney’s logos. There is also a Punks Comic animated character called Courtney, which also wears Adidas-branded clothing and shoes.
The German brand announced the news of Twitter where it wrote, “Today we leap Into The Metaverse with [Bored Ape Yacht Club], [Gmoney] & [Punks Comic]. It’s time to enter a world of limitless possibilities.”
While Adidas described the move as its entry into the metaverse, the link it provided was for adidas.com where visitors were encouraged to download its Confirmed app, a platform used for selling product.
Prior to today’s announcement, Adidas had already made moves in the metaverse through purchase of a plot of land on The Sandbox, an open source gaming platform. Short after Adidas made The Sandbox announcement, it then revealed it had partnered with Coinbase, a prominent crypto trading platform.
