Shanghai-based Hypebeast‘s grand opening of HBX on June 17, 2022, at 41 Division Street in Manhattan’s Chinatown neighborhood began as a celebration of the platform’s first physical store until a fight broke out among customers waiting in line to enter the store, leading to an arrest.
While waiting in line to buy a Nike Dunk High sneaker in a popular black and white colorway affectionately referred to as a Panda Dunk, customers began to push and shove each other, a fracas that escalated when 20-year-old Miguel Ovidio, 20 of Brooklyn allegedly pulled out a knife and slashed an individual waiting in line. According to reporting by the Daily News, Ovidio subsequently was arrested and charged with assault, menacing and possession of a weapon.
Based on an arrest image published by the Daily News, an individual who appears to be Ovido was shown in video (below) being repeatedly punched by several individuals in front of the store. It’s not known why he was being attacked though in all likelihood it was in connection with him pulling a knife while on line.
With an official opening time of 11:00 AM EST, customer began lining up at 6:00 AM and as the opening time drew closer, customers began shoving each other in an attempt to hove ahead in the line.
“It was customers who were involved,” an HBX store manager told the Daily News. “They started pushing to get in, getting closer and closer. “They’d been waiting for the new Nikes. It’s a mob scene.”
