Houston-born singer/songwriter Solange Knowles has adding to her already substantial musical resume with news she will write an original score of music for the New York City Ballet. According to the NY Times, The as-of-yet-untitled performance with choreography by Gianna Reisen costumes designed by Alejandro Gómez Palomo for Palomo Spain will premiere at the company’s annual Fall Fashion Gala fundraiser, on September 28, 2022. The score will be performed by New York City Ballet’s orchestra as well as some of Knowles’ musical collaborators.
Commenting on the endeavor on Instagram, Knowles wrote, “very excited to announce i’ve composed an original score for the New York City Ballet.”
The move makes sense for Knowles who is known for her love of theatrical choreography and visuals. In the past she has collaborated on multiple project with director Carlos Soto, a frequent creative partner with experimental theater director Robert Wilson. She’s also performed in artful spaces including the Guggenheim and Getty museums, along with the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas, and the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Germany.
The performance featuring Knowles’ score will show at Lincoln’s Center on October 1, 8, 11, and 16, 2022 as well as May 2, 11, 13, 17, and 18, 2023.
